3 warning signs an employee may be stealing from you

On Behalf of | Aug 2, 2024 | Business Law

It might take you weeks, months or even years to notice an employee has been stealing from you. By the time you notice they could have made a significant dent in your finances. Yet, even if they only steal a small amount, it is still a massive breach of the trust you placed in them.

So what warning signs could help you discover theft sooner and limit the damage they cause? Here are a few:

1. Things don’t add up

When you come to do your accounts you cannot square everything up. You seem to be short. The same could happen when you total up the takings in your cash register or count your stock. They might not be off by much. It might be so little that you dismiss it and assume you must have miscounted. But, especially if it occurs more than once, it could be a sign someone is stealing.

2. An employee appears to have gone up in the world

You always thought a particular employee was less smart than the others. But you understood they could not afford to buy nicer clothes or get their hair or nails done so did not say anything. However, lately, they seem to have upped their game. They are now coming in with designer clothes and handbags which they would struggle to afford on their salary.

3. A lack of transparency

You asked an employee for the accounts or stock list a week ago but they still have not given them to you. When you chase them they make another excuse. It’s almost as if they are trying to avoid giving them to you. What don’t they want you to see?

If you suspect an employee is stealing from you, it is important to understand how best to proceed.
